The $4 Bottle of Water
The wellness industry loves a villain. For years, the villain has been "Acidity." The theory goes: Modern life makes your body acidic, which breeds cancer and inflammation. Therefore, drinking Alkaline Water (pH 8+) will neutralize the acid and restore health. It is a compelling story. It is also physiologically impossible.
The Chemistry of Digestion
To understand why this is a scam, you just need to follow the water.
- You drink "High pH" Alkaline water.
- It travels down your esophagus.
- It lands in your Stomach.
Your stomach contains roughly 100ml of gastric juice, primarily Hydrochloric Acid (HCl). The pH of this environment is between 1.5 and 3.5. It is strong enough to dissolve zinc. When the Alkaline water touches the Gastric Acid, a simple neutralization reaction occurs. The high pH water is instantly lowered. By the time the liquid passes into your small intestine (where absorption happens), it is no longer alkaline. It has been acidified by your own body.
The Myth of Changing Blood pH
Even if the water did somehow survive the stomach, it wouldn't matter. Your body operates on Homeostasis. Your blood pH is one of the most tightly regulated numbers in human biology. It stays between 7.35 and 7.45.
- Below 7.35: Metabolic Acidosis (Coma/Death).
- Above 7.45: Metabolic Alkalosis (Seizures/Death).
If drinking water actually changed your blood pH, it would be a medical emergency. Luckily, your Lungs and Kidneys work 24/7 to buffer your pH. If you become too acidic, you breathe out more CO2. If you become too alkaline, you pee out bicarbonate. No amount of water will override this system.
The "Kangen" Pyramid
Much of the hype around alkaline water comes from Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) companies selling $4,000 ionizer machines. These machines use electrolysis to split water molecules. While they do change the pH of the water in the glass, the health claims attached to them (curing diabetes, preventing cancer) are unsupported by credible human trials.
The One Exception: Reflux
Is it useless? Not entirely. A 2012 laboratory study found that alkaline water (pH 8.8) instantly inactivates human pepsin. Pepsin is the enzyme responsible for the burning sensation during Acid Reflux or LPR (Silent Reflux). For people with severe heartburn, gargling or drinking alkaline water might provide temporary symptom relief in the throat. But this is a localized effect, not a systemic one.
The WellFact Protocol
- Don't buy the hype: There is no evidence that alkaline water improves longevity or athletic performance compared to regular water.
- Filter your water: Focus on removing contaminants (fluoride, chlorine, microplastics) rather than changing the pH.
- Mineralize: If you want health benefits, look for "Mineral Water" containing Magnesium and Calcium, not just "High pH" water.
